About the event
SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY:
Meet at the Bird Valley Trailhead by 9am review safety documents and project overview, gather tools for the trail. Spend the entire event on the trail and return to the trailhead by 3pm.
We will begin brushing from the parking lot and will remain below treeline. Approximately 1 mile of hiking and brushing.
WHAT IT TAKES:
Work will be strenuous at times and volunteers must come prepared with food and water for the day. We will not be returning to the trailhead for lunch. Volunteers MUST be prepared with appropriate attire (including sturdy boots, work gloves, eye protection) and safety gear.
WHAT TO WEAR:
Long Pants (you may stain them with dirt)
Long Sleeves (suggested)
Sturdy Work Boots (NOT sneakers)
WHAT TO BRING:
Food (lunch and snack)
Water bottles for a whole day on the trail (recommend 1 gallon)
Work Gear:
o Work Gloves
o Rain Gear, Warm layers, bug spray, sunscreen
o Eye Protection (sunglasses)
o Bear spray
o Backpack (lunch, food, water for the day)
Alaska Trails will provide hand tools:
- Loppers, folding hand saws, pruning shears, PPE (hardhats, eye pro, gloves)
WHAT NOT TO BRING:
Dogs
Children
Firearms (not a substitute for bear spray at volunteer events)
DIRECTIONS/ADDRESS/NAME OF TRAILHEAD:
Volunteers will meet at Bird Valley Trailhead (On the left side of the Seward Highway heading south, near Bird Creek campground and the Bird House Garage. Turn onto and continue up Konikson Rd until it turns into State Park Rd and dead ends at the trailhead) at 9am. After introductions, discussing the Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), and gathering tools, we will begin brushing from the trailhead.
