About the event
HIKING INFO (how long will the hike into the project site be, and what sort of terrain):
We will begin brushing from the trailhead. Moderate difficulty for hiking. Slight incline and uneven terrain.
SCHEDULE FOR THE EVENT:
Meet at the Honey Bear View Trailhead (AKA Bear Valley Hike on Google) by 6pm, review safety documents and project overview, gather tools for the trail. Spend the entire event on the trail and return to the trailhead by 9pm.
NOTE: There are only a handful of parking spots so volunteers may have to park approx .5 miles down the road.
WHAT IT TAKES (any sort of previous experience or physical ability, age restrictions, etc):
Work will be strenuous at times and volunteers must come prepared with food and water. We might return to the trailhead for lunch, but be prepared not to. Volunteers MUST be prepared with appropriate attire (including sturdy boots, work gloves, eye protection) and safety gear. PPE will be provided
WHAT TO WEAR:
Long Pants (you may stain them with dirt)
Long Sleeves (suggested)
Sturdy Work Boots (NOT sneakers)
WHAT TO BRING:
Food
Water bottle
Work Gear:
o Work Gloves
o Rain Gear, Warm layers, bug spray, sunscreen
o Eye Protection (sunglasses)
o Bear spray
o Backpack (lunch, food, water for the day)
Alaska Trails will provide hand tools:
- Loppers, folding hand saws, pruning shears, PPE (hardhats, eye pro, gloves)
WHAT NOT TO BRING:
Dogs
Children
Firearms (not a substitute for bear spray at volunteer events)
DIRECTIONS/ADDRESS/NAME OF TRAILHEAD:
Volunteers will meet at Golden View (Bear Valley) Trailhead (From downtown, take New Seward Highway toward Seward. Exit at Rabbit Creek and take left on Rabbit Creek Road. After a few miles of driving, take right on Clarks Road. You should see a Soccer field, Ray Storck Homestead park. From there take Clarks Road all the way to the end of the road. Take Kings Way to the valley. Take left on Snow Bear Dr. The road changes name to Black Bear Dr and sharp left to Honey Bear Ln. At the end of Honey Bear Ln., take right to the trailhead.) at TIME. After introductions, discussing the Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), and gathering tools, we will begin hiking from the trailhead and begin brushing.
