Prospect Heights Trailhead

South Fork Rim Trail

This project involves brushing and a lot of tread/drainage work. The trail needs to be brushed back to the trail standard in many spots and a stretch of trail is in need of better drainage options and treadwork. Gravel will be brought to harden the trail and fill in deeply entrenched sections.

About the event

The day will begin at the Prospect Heights trailhead in Chugach State Park. Volunteers will start brushing using hand saws, loppers, and weed whips. We will take care of any drainage issues as we go including clearing out the ditch on the uphill side of the trail.  An ATV or CannyCom will haul gravel into the site. When each load is dumped, volunteers will spread and compact the gravel using rakes and tamps.

From end to end, the worksite is approximately 0.5 mile. The work begins immediately from the trailhead, but the majority of the work is between the Powerline and Golden Grass trails.

This event is sponsored by Chugach Park Fund.

What to bring: Rain gear, sturdy work/hiking boots, snacks, water, sunscreen, long work pants, and work gloves and safety glasses if you have them (if you don't have gloves/safety glasses they will be provided for the day).

What NOT to bring: Alcohol, drugs, children, pets, and firearms.

Notes: This event is open to volunteers age 18 and up. Conditions could well be rainy and mud will likely be present on the trail. No experience is necessary, but volunteers should have a minimum ability to hike and work for about 5 hours during potentially inclement conditions.
