Alaska Trails has had a hand in completing many trail projects, especially since implementing the professional trail crew program in 2020. Trail funding has been secured for many Alaska Long Trail projects as well, completed by contractors and partners.

2025

  • Williwaw Lakes Trail - Chugach State Park

    • ​Rerouted 2,490' of trail to higher, drier ground

    • Installed 160' of step-and-run boardwalk across soggy sections

    • Dug 28 drains to keep water off the trail

    • Built 6 rock steps + armored roots for safer footing

    • Covered and re-seeded retired trail to help nature bounce back

    • 12’ of handrail added to the first switchback to discourage switchback cutting

    • 5’ long set of crib steps rising 22” out of the parking lot

    • 7 preexisting, failed boardwalk segments removed and replaced

    • 2 creek crossings reworked with stepping stones

    • 6 switchback turning platforms expanded to reduce grade around corners

    • 9 trench-style drains dug totaling ~500’

    • ~200’ of tread reshaped, outsloping, and backslope
