Grant History

2008  Recreational Equipment Incorporated (REI).  To engage disadvantaged youth in the outdoors through education and on-the-ground trail building experience at the Hillside Singletrack Trail Project, while providing additional expertise for the Anchorage Parks & Recreation Department’s Youth Employment in Parks (YEP) program.  Project Lead: Janice Towers.  Grant: $5,000

2007-08  AK DNR-P&OR Recreational Trails Grant #10795865 Hillside Singletrack Project Phase I.  Partnered with Singletrack Advocates to construct 7 1/2 miles of single-track trails.  Anchorage, AK.  Project Lead: Janice Tower.  Grant: $50,000, Project: $72,393

2007-08  AK DNR-P&OR Alaska Trails Initiative Grant # 10795843 Hillside Singletrack Project Phase I.  Partnered with Singletrack Advocates to construct 7 1/2 miles of single-track trails.  Anchorage, AK.  Project Lead: Janice Tower.  Grant: $91,571, Project: $139,571

2007-08  US National Park Service – RTCA, Challenge Cost Share Agreement.  International Klondike Goldrush Trail.  Coordination and facilitation of the International Klondike Goldrush Trail project.  Southeast Alaska.  Project Lead: Jillian Morrissey.  Grant: $20,000, Project: $28,450

2007-08  Home Depot Community Impact Grant.  Reconstruction of 350’ of new gravel trail at University Lake in Anchorage, AK.  Partners included the Anchorage Park Foundation, Anchorage Municipal Parks, UAA Facility Maintenance Operations, Moose’s Tooth, Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, University Community Council, and Great Harvest Bread Company.  Project Lead: Jack Mosby.  Grant: $2,700, Project: $5,650.

2007-08  AK DNR-P&OR Alaska Trails Initiative Grant # 10795836.  Purchase of two mobile tool trailers w/ hand tools used in the construction and maintenance of sustainable trails.  Each trailer has sufficient tools to outfit two 10-person crews.  Anchorage and Fairbanks.  Project Lead: Jack Mosby.  Grant: $14,990, Project: $16,590

2007-present  AK DNR-P&OR Recreation Trails Grant #10795730.  Alaska Trail Steward Training Program: Phase II, Advanced Trail Modules.  Development and distribution of advanced modules for the instruction of sustainable trail construction techniques.  Statewide.  Project Lead: Jillian Morrissey.  Grant: $37,205, Project: $76,605

2006-present  US Bureau of Land Management, Challenge Cost Share Agreement.  OHV/ATV Safety, Ethics & Etiquette Program.  Development and distribution of curriculum, PSA’s, and material related to OHV trail safety, ethics, etiquette and 17(b) easements.  Statewide.  Project Lead: Geoffrey Orth.  Grant: $51,000, Project: $102,400

2005-07  AK DNR-P&OR Recreational Trails Grant #10795746.  Far North Bicentennial Park Signage and Kiosk Program.  Partnered with Singletrack Advocates, FNBP Trails Advisory Committee and Anchorage Nordic Ski Association to construct kiosks and install trail maps and signs in FNBP.  Anchorage, AK.  Project Lead: Janice Tower.  Grant: $22,425, Project: $31,153

Sustainable Trail Education & Information

Ongoing.  Providing a quarterly newsletter that lets far-flung trail activists know what is happening with trails in other parts of the state.  Statewide.  Project Lead: Eric Troyer.

2009  Will host a statewide trails conference in conjunction with the annual Alaska Recreation and Parks Association conference.  Anchorage, AK.  Project Lead: Jillian Morrissey.

2008  Partnered with the National Park Service – RTCA for a presentation on Sustainable Multi-Use Trail Design to the Fairbanks North Star Borough Trails Advisory Commission and the public.  Fairbanks, AK  Project Leads: Kevin Meyer & Geoffrey Orth.

2008  Introductory Trail Module taught in Slana; Advanced Trail Modules taught at University Alaska Anchorage; combined Intro/Advanced Trail Modules taught in Kodiak, Bethel, Homer, Chugach State Park, Anchorage, and Palmer.  Project Lead: Jillian Morrissey.

2008  Introductory Trail Module and one Advanced Trail Module (Wet Trails) taught in Petersburg in conjunction with AK Recreation and Park Association annual conference with support from the Petersburg Ranger District, Tongass National Forest, and Petersburg Parks and Recreation Dept.  Project Lead: Jack Mosby.

2008  Facilitated workshop and training on Trail Condition & Assessment Survey (TRACS) for federal, state, borough agencies and trail organizations in the public sector.  Anchorage/Statewide.  Project Lead: Jillian Morrissey.
